EPA to Check CAFOs for Permit Requirements

The Environmental Protection Agency says it will initiate a new national effort to track down concentrated animal feeding operations operating without permits and determine for itself if they must be regulated. This action is the result of an agreement between EPA and the National Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club and Waterkeeper Alliance.

Beef Cattle SPA Workshop set for June 8

It will be held at the Brown County Extension Office, 605 Fisk Avenue in Brownwood, Texas. The SPA workshop and analysis is designed to help producers reduce their cost of production and improve their production and marketing efficiency.

Tour gives an inside look at beef farming

Happy cows don’t come only from California. Some local farmers have spent years raising happy cattle designed specifically for consumption.
As National Beef Month nears an end, members of the New York Beef Industry Council completed a beef farm tour that aimed to educate people across the state on how beef cattle are raised. The Western New York leg of the tour brought them to SK Herefords on Ryan Road in Medina on Wednesday, where David Schubel and Phil and Dawn Keppler calve up to 300 cows every spring on approximately 800 acres of pasture.

Study shows ground beef from grain-fed cattle healthier than grass-fed

Grass-fed beef may not have as many healthful traits as some perceive, according to results from a recent Texas AgriLife Research study.
Dr. Stephen Smith, an AgriLife Research meat scientist, and a team of researchers have found that contrary to popular perception, ground beef from pasture-fed cattle had no beneficial effects on plasma lipid.
