Although election night results are not finalized, it does appear likely that the Senate will remain in Republican control. The other big news maker for agriculture Tuesday night was that House Agriculture Committee chairman Collin Peterson (D., Minn.), a longtime champion of agriculture, loss of his seat.

USDA moves toward all-RFID system for officially identifying cattle

The USDA has reopened the debate in the cattle industry on radio-frequency tags with a new proposal that has the stated goal of increasing overall traceability in case of disease outbreaks in cattle. It asked the industry to weigh in with comments on its plan to make low-frequency identification tags, commonly known as RFID tags, the only official tags for use in interstate movement of cattle within a few years.

Cattle markets current, beef demand strong

The industry has made extraordinary headway in getting through the backlog of fed cattle caused by COVID-19-related shutdowns, Don Close, a RaboResearch senior analyst, told Capital Press. Slaughter rates fully recuperated when plants went back on line. But the backlog resulted in carcasses that were 20 to 30 pounds heavier than a year earlier, and beef production has been extra heavy. The combination of good slaughter rates and heavier carcass rates “has really cranked the tonnage,” he said.
All told, 83% of respondents are 55 or older, compared to 60% in 2007. Of those, 60% are 64 or older, compared to 32% in 2007. For context, the average age of agricultural producers in the 2017 USDA Census of Agriculture was 57.5. Keep in mind, 50% of respondents classified themselves as the owner/manager of the operation, while another 45% said they were the owner.
