When blended with our beef fat, imported lean beef trim increases the net value of U.S. fed cattle. Two weeks ago we discussed how COVID-19 has caused challenges for consumers and farmers alike regarding beef supply and demand. As consumers concern themselves with providing quality food for family members that are now eating more meals at home, cattlemen struggle with a backlog of finished cattle that packers can’t get harvested. That causes some to ask, “Why are we importing beef?”

As Beef Month rolls around once again, I’m reminded of just how important it is as agriculturalist, ranchers, educators, and future leaders that we continue to share our stories and the truth about what happens every day on the ranch. I’m not talking about just the cute pictures of baby calves in the grass or the best bull in our line-up for an upcoming sale. While these photos are important to the livelihood of your operations, there is so much more to tell. Had it not been for social media and visiting my uncles’ ranch now and then, I wouldn’t have had any exposure to the beef industry even growing up in my brick-paved water tower town in south central Kansas.

Farmers “are becoming unhinged” as livestock gluts — exacerbated by a wave of slaughterhouse disruptions — are coinciding with record-high wholesale beef prices, American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall said Friday.
