Avoiding Weather Related Mineral Deficiencies All Year Round

Avoiding Weather Related Mineral Deficiencies All Year Round

Gilda V. Bryant

California Cattlemen

In 2019, severe spring weather included blizzards, floods and twisters that created serious management concerns for beef producers. Cattle reduced their mineral consumption because free choice minerals likely washed away, lost effectiveness due to leaching or were not provided consistently. Some producers concentrated only on moving animals to higher ground. Weather caused delays in working cattle, further disrupting supplementation and vaccination schedules. Developing Replacement Heifers

Developing Replacement Heifers

Kaitlyn Sarlo Davila and Todd Thrift

Beefmaster Payweight

Heifer development can be daunting: it is often one of the largest expenses of a cow-calf operation. This is due to feed costs, but also in large part due to loss when heifers don’t rebreed. IGS Feeder Profit Calculator ™ Highlights Profit, Reduces Risk

IGS Feeder Profit Calculator ™ Highlights Profit, Reduces Risk

The Profit Picture

International Genetic Solutions offers free, third-party validation on feeder calves. When profit-focused genetics combine with superior calf management, the producer has done the hard work. Still, that leaves little guarantee on sale day. The IGS Feeder Profit Calculator™ seeks to minimize such risk. Using the IGS Feeder Profit Calculator, cattlemen are able to provide sire information, regardless of breed, as well as preconditioning, weaning and health data in exchange for a Total Relative Value that compares the profit potential of their calves to the industry at large.

Vegan Cory Booker Doesn’t Care if You Eat Meat. But Calls U.S. Agriculture “Perverse.”

The Farmers Daughter

Let me be really blunt: Booker’s comments on agriculture scare the crap out of me. Do you see what he did? He gave lip service to supporting family farms. But he literally called U.S. agriculture “perverse.” He said we’re polluting water, making people sick, abusing animals, and ruining the environment. He couches his criticisms as if they’re against “factory farming” and “corporate practices.” But those terms are just propaganda and activist talking points.

Calf Preconditioning: The Best for Both Worlds

Calf Preconditioning: The Best for Both Worlds

Jon Seeger

Zoetis

Nearly all cow/calf producers will say their goal is to sell calves for a premium on sale day. However, most buyers will say their objective is to buy healthy calves as economically as possible. While these may seem like competing interests, both buyers and sellers can get what they want with calf preconditioning programs.
