When KW Cattle Company transitioned from a 3,000-head stocker operation to an Angus seedstock business, they brought all of those backgrounding lessons with them. “Backgrounding was a great educational experience,” says ranch manager Nathan Wells. “We saw the traits and characteristics commercial beef producers need as well as those they don’t want.” As a result, the Fort Scott, Kansas, ranch has powered its bull genetics, management and development with commercial customers in mind.
