My calendar says early June and fly season in the northern climates is under way. Here in Michigan, now is the time to be implementing your fly control program. The two major species of flies that cause the most serious production losses are the horn fly and face fly. The horn fly alone is estimated to cause animal losses to the United States beef industry over 1.5 billion with current market prices.

A new study, The Large Potential of local Croplands to Meet Food Demand in the United States, was recently conducted by Professor Elliott Campbell of the University of California, Merced.  The study itself is behind a paywall, but provides evidence that shows that up to 90% of Americans could be fed entirely by food grown or raised within 100 miles of their homes.

The Miles City Livestock Commission building burned to the ground on Saturday, with the loss estimated at more than $1 million. Firefighters were called to the structure, located at 337 I-94 Business on the west end of town, just after noon, said Custer County Fire Chief Bud Peterson. When an alarm went off, one of the workers at the commission saw smoke coming out of the interior of the building, Peterson said.
