Lawmaker opposes livestock ID plan

The head of the U.S. House panel that sets agricultural spending said Wednesday she won’t support a government plan to create a livestock identification system that may result in customized provisions for each state.

"I don’t believe it is going to work," Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., told Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at a congressional hearing. Trying to create a national system among 50 states and tribal nations is likely to fail and may be "a waste of money," she said.
