New FAM outbreak in south Brazil
Brazilian authorities confirmed Thursday a new outbreak of the highly contagious foot and mouth disease in the state of Matto Grosso do Sul, close to the Paraguayan border.
A similar outbreak last October forced the termination of thousands of cattle in the region.
“The new case was identified on a ranch in the municipality of Japora during routine checks carried out by the official veterinary service” the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry reported in a release.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Agriculture Secretary Michael Johanns says it’s unlikely that older Canadian cows and beef products will be crossing the border this year.
Two recent mad cow cases north of the border, including one confirmed in British Columbia this week, have created more work for administrators devising a plan to resume trade, Johanns said Thursday after meeting with Canada’s Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl for the first time.
