DUNN, N.C. – On a cool crisp night, a coyote’s howl can be heard for miles. For years the wail has been considered the theme song for the wild west – now it may become a common sound around here.

Coyotes, which used to be found only in western states, have now taken up residence in Harnett County. Though the animals are elusive, don’t be surprised to see one sneaking through the yard on a midnight hunt.

Clyde Lane, University of Tennessee animal science professor, shares with us this week some good information on selecting replacement heifers:

Beef cattle producers should use all available information when selecting replacement heifers.

“Selecting a replacement heifer on appearance only is very risky,” Lane said. “A heifer must be of the acceptable type if she is to be kept as a replacement. However, she must also have the genetic potential to produce a heavy calf. This is the reason records must also be utilized when making selection decisions.”
